Although the Site Fights focuses on fun, friendship, and spirit, in its simplest form it is a competition. When a site signs up to fight, they "weigh in" or choose which team they would like to be a part of. There are 23 teams in the Site Fights, divided into six Sides or groups of four. Each team has a theme, though a site doesn't have to have the same theme to join that team.

Once they are on a team, a fighter goes through three team rounds. The first round is a qualifying round, where a site basically shows it has some votes. If a site qualifies four days out of the week, they will move up to the next round.

The next two rounds of competition are still within the team, but are on a 10-point system. The site with the most votes for the day is awarded a 10, the second highest a 9, and so on. At the end of the week, the site with the most points total moves up to the next round, and second place - and sometimes third place as well - earn a rematch in the same ring for the next week. All the other sites are knocked out, but if they want to continue fighting they simply send an email to their team leader before Sunday midnight (Eastern/New York time) asking to start over again. Most teams will restart a site in the qualifying rounds, though a few do it differently so it's best to ask your team leader what they do.

What happens after a site has gone through these three rounds? Well, then its time to begin representing your team on a Site Fights wide level! Each week the winner of every team's top round goes to the Warzone, where they fight against the winners from the teams on their Side of the Warzone. The winners from each of these matches then go on to the highest level of the year-round competition, the DMan Dome. Here the winners from each Side of the Warzone fight against each other and the previous week's champion to try to become the newest Site Fights Champion!

Once a site becomes champion, they continue on in the DMan Dome for another week trying to defend their title. If they sucessfully defend their title for two weeks, making their run in the Dome three weeks total, they retire as a champion and, along with winning some prizes, are given the chance to return in January for the biggest of the big: the Site Fighter of the Year competition. In this annual event, all three-time champion sites fight against each other for this title and prizes such as free domain hosting for a year!

Where do the votes come in, you're wondering? Well, in the Site Fights the voters decide, which means web surfers everywhere can cast a vote! Each person can vote for a site once per day per ISP, which means if you only have one IP number you can only vote once. This comes into place with such servers as AOL, where you may have many email addresses but can only vote once. You can, however, vote for as many sites as you want, even in the same ring!

Team rounds are run from Monday to Saturday, each voting day going from midnight to midnight, New York time. The scores will be posted as close to midnight as the team leader can manage, although with the time differences it is impossible for some team leaders to have their scores up right at midnight.

In the Warzone and Dome, however, things are a bit different. These rounds also run Sunday, making the fighting time a full 7-day week. Voting opens at around noon NY time and closes approximately then the next day.

Getting votes can be quite an undertaking, but one thing to remember is to always look at a site before you agree to vote for it. Another important thing to remember is to always vote when you say you will!

Where can you get votes, however? Well, there are many ways, but one of the most popular is a vote exchange! A vote exchange is exactly what it sounds, two people agree to exchange votes or vote for each other. Many teams have their own vote exchanges set up, where people can post their site and ask for exchanges. There is, however, a Site Fights wide program... DVote Exchange!
